Heart disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are two of the most common diseases in the world. Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is characterized by a reduction in insulin sensitivity and an increase in blood glucose levels. Plaque accumulates in the coronary arteries over time, leading to the development of coronary artery disease, also known as heart disease, and an increased risk of myocardial infarction in the future. While there are distinct disease processes associated with each of these disorders, there is a significant correlation between the development of T2DM and the incidence of coronary artery disease.
